Advisers, brokers should brace for a slow growth future

Advisers, brokers should brace for a slow growth future

20 September 2023 | Featured Story

The brokers and financial advisers struggling to grow revenues and profitability at the frontline of South Africa’s faltering economy should brace for a few more years of hardship, unless Hersov’s Dream becomes a reality. Until such time, this writer has some sad news to share. Even if government finds a miracle cure for Eskom, there are too many other constraints acting as a drag on the country’s GDP growth.

A financial journo’s trying tango with writer’s block

It is official. After a couple of hours staring at a flashing MS Word cursor, this writer determined that he was suffering from a severe case of writer’s block. Or at least the first half of the Oxford Languages definition of the phrase, which reads: ‘the condition of being unable to think of what to write about, or how to proceed with writing’. In most cases a quick trawl of the online media cures this ailment; but this morning, despite diving in-and-out of myriad websites and even wasting an hour-or-so on the YouTube … nothing!

August is Women’s Month and in our planning for this edition, it was incredible to see how many companies really embrace and understand the role women play in companies and in the industry itself. There was a time when this was very different, so for me, change is really happening. One company that really took it to the next level was Global Choices, where the dynamics women bring into the business are recognised and appreciated more than I have ever seen. Our front cover really demonstrates this, and we are extremely proud of our first front cover with a bunch of amazing women who are valued, seen and recognised for the efforts they bring to the business. May this be the first of many more to come! Well done to Wimpie and his team for embracing the value women bring to this industry.
