What’s inside… FAnews Magazine August 2023

16 August 2023 | The Stage

August is Women’s Month and in our planning for this edition, it was incredible to see how many companies really embrace and understand the role women play in companies and in the industry itself. There was a time when this was very different, so for me, change is really happening. One company that really took it to the next level was Global Choices, where the dynamics women bring into the business are recognised and appreciated more than I have ever seen. Our front cover really demonstrates this, and we are extremely proud of our first front cover with a bunch of amazing women who are valued, seen and recognised for the efforts they bring to the business. May this be the first of many more to come! Well done to Wimpie and his team for embracing the value women bring to this industry.

The never-ending grind to grow followers, likes and social media

11 August 2023 | The Stage

Early this morning, around 2am, this writer was woken by the clunk and grind of a generator or some-or-other other grating household machinery. As is often the case, instead of diving back under the covers for a few more hours of shuteye, his hand reached for the ever-present smartphone, and he started the ritualistic browse of assorted news websites and social media accounts. An hour or so later, no surprises, it was impossible to fall asleep again.

Insurance industry must adopt a pre-emptive approach to systemic risks

28 July 2023 | The Stage

Stakeholders in South Africa’s insurance and reinsurance industry must adopt a pre-emptive approach to systemic risks and enshrine spirituality, morality, values and ethics in their response to major loss events. This message emerged on day one of the African Insurance Exchange (AIE 2023) conference, during an inspiring keynote address by Gift of the Givers founder, Dr Imtiaz Sooliman. His talk, titled ‘how insurance companies can partner with government and non-government organisations (NGOs) in response to climate change’ drew a standing ovation from the audience, a rare occurrence at such events.

Meeting constitutional muster does not make AARTO workable…

17 July 2023 | The Stage

The fact that a law or regulation meets constitutional muster does not guarantee that it is workable, nor ensure that the many citizens subject to that law will enjoy fair outcomes. Case in point, the 12 July 2023 Constitutional Court of South Africa (the Court) judgement handed down in a matter between the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) and the Minister of Transport and four other public sector respondents.
