As 2023 gives way to 2024, the South Africa focused online news sites were chockful the usual dreck. Those among us who were unable to escape to the bushveld or coast over the holidays were subjected to countless reports of corruption, crime, cronyism and every imaginable form of political skulduggery, domestic and offshore. In this writer’s humble opinion, you will have to concentrate on your ‘reading for understanding’ skills this year, as the weaponised mainstream media dusts off their nuclear arsenal to influence 2024 opinion.

The trouble with many political- and social-leaning inclusivity programmes is that they introduce exclusionary focuses to achieve their objectives. So, instead of defining ‘inclusion’ as the ‘the practise or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for [all] people’, as the Oxford Languages definition begins, they append ‘who might otherwise be excluded or marginalised’ for a long, long list of reasons.

Over the past decade-or-so governments, the private sector and regulatory authorities have become increasingly focused on the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors across their respective areas of influence. ESG is now top-of-mind at the board level of financial services firms, with terms such as ‘carbon neutral’; ‘financial inclusivity’; ‘inclusive growth’; and ‘net-zero’ liberally seeded into their external comms, whether these be annual financial statements aimed at shareholders or media statements intended for the public.
