Anyone who watched The Big Short, a 2015 American biographical film based on a similarly named-2010 book by Michael Lewis, will appreciate that financial markets can be manipulated. There are countless scenes in the movie that illustrate how conflict of interest and greed disrupt the mechanisms that are meant to feed back into market prices. A prime example of this was the heated argument between a housing market ‘shorter’ and a ratings agency representative, with the former accusing the latter of abandoning common sense in favour of profit when rating sub-prime mortgages.

Non-life insurance brokers in search of an emerging trend to take their brokerages to the next level could do worse than adding cyber liability insurance to their product mix. This is because cyber risk is emerging alongside climate change and pandemic as one of the greatest risks of modern times. A media release by global reinsurer, Munich Re, suggests that better preparation is needed to tackle emerging risk trends. “The coronavirus pandemic will be a lesson to us all,” wrote Torsten Jeworrek, Member of the Board of Management at the reinsurer. “We must take action more rapidly and vigorously to ensure that we are not as unprepared for other emerging risks as we were with COVID-19”. This action could include ensuring that both your commercial and personal lines clients are adequately protected against cyber risk.

Hardening rates and mistrust following non-life insurers’ handling of pandemic-related business interruption claims could make for tough negotiations when commercial non-life insurance brokers sit opposite their small and medium enterprise (SME) clients to renew policies. Recent news flows suggest that the next round of renewals could contain sharp increases across a range of insured perils. Global reinsurer Munich Re recently reported that the combination of a hardening insurance market, ‘lower for longer’ interest rates and larger than forecast pandemic and non-pandemic losses would make insurance covers more expensive, particularly for long term risks in third-party liability and other lines.
