Still very real deficit in SA savings environment, Index finds

04 May 2016

The latest results of the Investec GIBS Savings Index reveal a net figure for 2015 of 63.0, down from 63.4 for the first half of 2015. Launched in January 2016 to provide the real facts around SA’s national state of savings, the index score paints a subdued picture of the country’s ability to fund investment through savings. In turn, this points to low levels of near-term economic growth with an on-going need to remain a willing recipient of foreign capital to fund investment. Positives from the data include cumulative gross savings as a percent of GDP are holding up well, capital stock per worker continues to show steady gains and SA’s high real interest rate for 2015Q4 stands out favourably in a world of capital mobility.
