The prestigious 14th annual Cape to Rio yacht race set off on 4th January 2014 with 36 confirmed entries who sailed from the Cape Town Yacht Club in an effort to reach Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before 1st February. Competing against extreme weather and a host of international teams in a race across the Atlantic Ocean and coming in 6th place were six WITS students, with a corrected elapsed time of 23 days, 18 hours and 41 minutes.

Recent statistics from wealth consultancy, New World Wealth, reveal that South Africa is the wealthiest country on the continent with 48% of the country's multimillionaires (individuals with a net worth of more than R300m) living in Johannesburg, increasing from 230 individuals recorded in 2007 to 285 currently.
