Most public information about unit trust funds is focussed on past returns or an indication of potential future returns. Selecting a fund that will perform according to an investor’s expectations, or even outperform expectations, is a very difficult task – particularly for the average investor who has access to very limited information. In fact it is such a difficult task that the entire multi-management and fund manager research industry has been created - based on the premise that there are in fact skilled individuals out there, with access to more information than the average investor, and therefore able to better identity superior performing unit trust funds. But even these experts find it difficult to identify funds that consistently outperform investor’s expectations on an on-going basis.

The Resilient group of companies, which has regularly outperformed its peers in terms of capital and dividend growth, has had a torrid start to the 2018 calendar year. The Resilient stable includes the likes of Resilient REIT, NEPI Rockcastle, Fortress Income Fund and Greenbay Properties. The recent sell-off has been the result of rumours of a Viceroy research report, which we now know was actually targeted at Capitec. Another reason has been hedge funds short-selling the Resilient stable. On 9 February 2018, after market close, Resilient put out a note identifying the party behind the large short position and the negative note as a well-known South African hedge fund manager.
