Consumer price inflation was 2.2% year-on-year as at the end of June 2020. This was marginally up from 2.1% year-on-year the previous month. The May inflation print was the lowest in more than a decade and June was only slightly higher.

SA Reserve Bank Governor, Lesetja Kganyago, announced this afternoon that the monetary policy committee (MPC) had decided to maintain its accommodative stance by lowering the repo rate by an additional 25 basis points (bps) to a record low of 3.50%.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to decrease the repo rate by 25 basis points to 3.50%. This was a split vote within the committee with three members voting for the rate cut and two members voting for no change in the short-term interest rate.
