Emerging risks in insurance

In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the insurance industry faces the challenge of identifying and managing emerging risks that could significantly impact insurers and policyholders alike.

FAnews spoke to Spiros Fatouros, Chief Executive Officer at Marsh Africa and South Africa, who sheds light on key strategies and concerns shaping the sector today.

Staying informed about emerging risks

“Insurers utilise advanced tools such as data analytics and AI to stay ahead of emerging risks,” explained Fatouros. “By analysing vast amounts of data, insurers can pinpoint patterns and trends that signal potential risks early on.”

Additionally, he noted the role of reinsurance brokers, who provide a global perspective on emerging risks through their access to global reinsurance markets.

Fatouros highlighted insights from the Global Risks Report developed in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF). “Emerging risks such as extreme weather events, AI-generated misinformation, societal polarisation, rising costs of living, and cyberattacks are becoming increasingly significant,” he stated.

These risks, according to Fatouros, have the potential to reshape the insurance landscape fundamentally, underscoring the uncertainty and complexity insurers must navigate.

“Global supply chains have also grown increasingly intricate, spanning multiple countries and regions,” noted Fatouros. “Disruptions in these chains can cause widespread ripple effects, affecting everything from raw material costs to business interruption claims.”

He emphasised that such disruptions necessitate a thorough reassessment of underwriting and risk management strategies within the insurance sector.

Cyber threats, risk and resilience

“Cyber-physical threats, including ransomware attacks on critical infrastructure, pose significant risks to both insurers and policyholders,” warned Fatouros.

He stressed the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and comprehensive insurance coverage to mitigate potential financial losses and operational disruptions caused by cyber incidents.

To protect against cyber threats, Fatouros advocated a dual approach of cyber risk management and transfer. “Policyholders should invest in advanced cybersecurity technologies and tools,” he advised. “They should also consider cyber insurance coverage to mitigate financial impacts from cyber incidents, including extortion and regulatory fines.”

Addressing emerging risks

“Insurers are increasingly leveraging data analytics, AI, and risk modelling to develop tailored strategies for managing emerging risks,” revealed Fatouros. These innovations enable insurers to better understand and mitigate emerging threats, enhancing their ability to offer proactive risk management solutions to policyholders.

Collaboration between insurers, brokers, and policyholders is also pivotal in developing robust risk management strategies tailored to address emerging threats. “Brokers play a crucial role as intermediaries between insurers and policyholders,” highlighted Fatouros. “Their deep industry knowledge and client relationships provide valuable insights that enhance insurers' understanding of sector-specific risks.”

“Collaboration between insurers and policyholders is essential for developing effective risk management strategies,” asserted Fatouros. “Policyholders' industry expertise can provide invaluable insights into emerging risks specific to their sectors, enabling insurers to refine their risk models and strategies accordingly.”

Risk management and mitigation strategies

“Effective risk management plays a pivotal role in mitigating the impact of emerging risks,” affirmed Fatouros. “By identifying and addressing potential threats early on, insurers can adapt their practices and products to protect both their business and policyholders from unforeseen losses.”

Fatouros emphasised the importance of proactive risk mitigation strategies for policyholders, regardless of specific products or solutions. “Regular cyber assessments, strong security protocols, and comprehensive risk management frameworks are critical,” he advised. “These measures help policyholders mitigate risks and ensure resilience against evolving threats.”

In conclusion, “as the global risk landscape continues to evolve, insurers, brokers and policyholders must remain vigilant and adaptive. By embracing innovation and collaboration, they can effectively navigate emerging risks and safeguard against potential disruptions in an increasingly interconnected world,” concluded Fatouros.
