Are we seeing the first stages of American style campaign donations in South Africa, where the big corporates are starting to have an impact on government policy? In this instance the big corporate is the corner green grocer paying for the next election campaign of the current minister of health?
The parody may well have some truth. Why else would the minister continue with gospel according to the vegetables, when all reasonable people, international scientists, the medical profession and the World Medical Association maintain that Antiretroviral (ARV) medication is the only treatment that is scientifically proven to prolong the lives of people with AIDS?
Last time I checked the minister didn't have a medical degree, so one wonders who is advising the office, and for what possible reason, because it appears that the only people to suffer will be those who have the virus.
And then the chairperson of the South African Medical Association steps up to the plate and tells the public that what the minister is doing is breaking the law. If that's the case, why isn't the minister arrested? Why doesn't the honourable minister listen to the experts and perhaps employ advisors who advise expertly.
