And now, for something completely different… How pandemic and lockdown create opportunities for personal growth

And now, for something completely different… How pandemic and lockdown create opportunities for personal growth

07 September 2020

As countries and economies wrestle with the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a small group of touchy-feely types suggest the crisis may set the stage for “the greatest human growth trajectory of our time”. The three panellists who participated in the 2 September 2020 webinar, hosted by The Collaborative Exchange, will lambaste me for the touchy-feely descriptor; but bear with me. As I warned in the article’s title, and with apologies to the crowd at Monty Python, I have diverted from my usual griping about economics, money, and politics to take a stab at something completely different.

Up sh*t creek without a paddle: Cuffing all of the corrupt could leave South Africans adrift in a rudderless ship

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s 23 August 2020 letter to his comrades in the African National Congress (ANC) could be a harbinger of change in domestic politics; but it might not be the change that South Africa needs. Imagine, if you will, the outcome of the corruption debate that is likely to dominate the ANC’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for Saturday, 29 August. One might predict the outcome of this meeting with a coin toss: Heads, those present give the President their half-hearted support to stamp out corruption within the party and public sector; tails, they embark on the process of another presidential substitution.

Another fantastic read… and not only because we give you high level CPD content, but because we have covered all the various industry issues relevant at the moment. For now quite a lot of our articles are Covid-19 related, just because it is so part of our lives… but all indications are that we can slowly but surely talk less about the new normal and more about a better version of life as we knew it before the pandemic hit. Will life ever be ‘normal’ again? I suppose only time will tell… In the meantime, enjoy the August 2020 edition. If you are not part of the over 15 600 registered CPD users, you are missing out, because we make it easy for you. This edition is packed with high-level, well researched content and we are proud of an excellent final product.

We interrupt today’s opening paragraphs to fire up our petrol generator as Eskom Limited, the eternal struggler, once again fails to provide enough power for the entire country, despite South Africa experiencing the most significant economic contraction in history. We have been expecting another round of load shedding, an inevitability confirmed by the emergence of a new phrase in our mainstream consumer media. Any of you heard of load reduction? It is nothing other than load shedding by another name. Featuring one of the dozens of mismanaged state-owned entities (SOEs) in our introduction is opportune given the proxy these institutions present of the government of the day.
