Trustco easter drive at Nazareth House
Seek and treat dis-ease, not just disease All the dis-eases ? loneliness, pain, fears and worries, to name just a few ? are often the things that make life most miserable for an older person, rather than specific diseases.
On request of the Trustco staff, the Trustco social committee, The Trustcodians, have committed this year to “giving something back to those who are less fortunate than us”. One of the highlights so far this year was our Easter celebration with the aged folk and orphaned children at Nazareth House in Yeoville, Johannesburg.
In traditional form, the Trustco staff members pitched in with funds, goodies and wonderful snack platters to take with to Nazareth House on the 21st April 2011. The stark reality of the dirty streets of Johannesburg were apparent to all. As we arrived, we could not help but be in awe of the contrast between what goes on outside the 10ft walls, when compared to the oasis we encountered on inside. Established in 1921, the architecture has certainly stood the test of time. Well kept gardens, church buildings and ample facilities greeted us.
With everybody’s contributions, we were able to give each of the 83 aged folk a gift pack filled with exciting “treats” and they enjoyed some mouthwatering eats. There were smiles all around and the Trustco staff that were there to share the day with them, had a great time. So often we forget about the value of our older folk and spending time with them really had an impact on all who were there.
Around the same time, we hosted an Easter party for the children’s section of Nazareth House, where 29 orphaned children reside. Commencing with an Easter egg hunt, where the older kids hunted on behalf of the little ones too, it was followed by the handing out of an age appropriate gift pack for each child. Then it was time to have a party! The kids and staff had a wonderful time and are looking forward to seeing us again.
The Trustcodians are already planning their next “pay it forward” event.
