Tracker double teams with Tembisa to launch street basketball courts
Tracker yesterday (November 21, 2006) officially handed over 10 street
basketball courts to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality as part of its R2-million Corporate Social Investment campaign.
The courts are all located in Tembisa and will provide an exciting recreational alternative for youngsters in the area. Tracker has invested more than R300 000 in the project to date and hopes to roll it out to other townships in South Africa.
"Our aim with this project is to create a place for the youth to come and exercise in a fun and safe way while fostering community relations. Basketball offers an exciting alternative to more traditional South African pastimes and is one of the fastest growing sports in Africa. Some of these courts have been completed for some time already and it has been heart warming to see the extent to which they're being utilised by the community," says Koos Radebe, patron of Tracker's Corporate Social Investment programme.
"The idea for basketball flowed from our connections to LoJack in the United States, the global leaders in vehicle tracking, where basketball enjoys a massive following. While it's not our primary objective, we're quietly crossing our fingers in the hope that we may help create a few basketball stars of the future," comments Tracker's Managing Director, Pierre de Clerk.
