Tracker and police rescue man in hostage drama

11 June 2007 | People and Companies | News | Tracker

Moments after being the victim of a traumatic house attack shortly before 8
o'clock this morning (June 11, 2007), a Kempton Park woman had to watch
helplessly as two armed men took her husband hostage and drove off in their
family car.

The distraught woman immediately contacted the police who, in turn,
contacted Tracker to activate the stolen vehicle.

'The recovery teams quickly picked up the Tracker signal and followed it to
the Johannesburg CBD. As they closed in on the vehicle, the hostage managed
to jump out of the car and fled into the traffic. The police then
immediately arrested the two suspects and recovered a handgun with 30 rounds
of live ammunition," says Tracker's Communications Manager, Gareth Crocker.

Various items taken in the robbery were recovered on the scene including a
television, DVD player, a laptop, a heater and several cell phones.

"We would again like to praise our partners in the police who had no less
than ten vehicles involved in the track, including the Cleveland SAPS, the
JHB Highway Patrol and the Johannesburg Metro Special Patrol. It's an
incredible feeling for us as a company to not only help rescue this man and
reunite him with his wife, but to see their alleged attackers apprehended.
This is certainly ongoing evidence of the impact the vehicle tracking
industry is having on violent crime in South Africa," says Crocker.

The whole ordeal, from the house attack to the suspects being arrested, was
over in less than an hour.

In just over ten years, Tracker, with the support of the South African
police, has recovered almost 33 000 vehicles and arrested more than 6600
criminals.
