The Women in SA Financial Services Network creates an inclusive platform for women across the financial industry
Following the successful launch of the inaugural Women in SA Financial Services Network event on 23 May in Johannesburg, hosted by global financial software solutions company Bravura, this time the in-person meet up came back on 27 October, at the 10X Investments office in Cape Town.
Although men were welcome, the evening was mainly for women across the South African financial services industry to connect with one another, share their skills, professional experiences and build relationships.
A recent study by Deloitte notes that even with a recently increased focus on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, the proportion of women in leadership roles within financial services firms, has modestly risen from 22% in 2020 to 24% in 2021. However, it is projected to grow to 28% by 2030. Though growth of women in financial services is occurring at a steady pace, the numbers are still well below the parity.
The low growth in numbers is one of the reasons why there is a need for initiatives such as the Women in SA Financial Services Network.
This network provides a platform to empower and connect women in the industry so that they can gain and build positive support structures for their careers.
Caroline Naylor-Renn, Chief Operating Officer at 10X Investments, states: “We are very excited to be part of this initiative that fosters connection and skills sharing among women in the industry. It is important that we create a platform for professional networking where we can skip the formalities and connect as well as learn from each other. We would really like to see this network grow and play a vital role in supporting the dynamic individuals who are part of it.”
The industry needs spaces that are inclusive to foster support and growth from within the financial sector. The evening was filled with conversations about career growth and development.
“This is a fabulous event and what I like is the diversity of women from various companies within the financial industry who are mingling and chattingin a peaceful environment, which you often see at these kinds of events. I really like these kinds of events which are just about networking, no presentations or inspirational speakers and formalities” highlighted Georgina Smith, INN8 Head of Training and development.
This initiative was launched on 8th March this year, in occasion of International Women’s Day, with the support from Bravura , Stanlib, INN8, Altus and 10X Investments.
