Sizzling cycle race for Sandton CBD
Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Gauteng will be filled with the smell of burning rubber on the 1st July as part of the next exciting leg of the Formula 1 of South African cycling - the Liberty Life Criterium Series.
The beauty of this innovative approach to cycling is that each Criterium event features a far more spectator-friendly; European loop-style of racing that takes place around a closed circuit.
The Liberty Life Criterium in Sandton will have even more nail biting fun in the form of a 2km circuit through the streets of Sandtons CBD, which will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event. The 2km course will culminate in an exciting finish, located in the heart of Sandtons revitalised CBD - the historic Nelson Mandela Square.
The day will start at 11:30am with an Individual Time Trial followed by a Team Time Trial made up of six pre-selected teams. This will be followed by the Veterans race, featuring 40 invited riders who will cycle for 25 minutes plus one lap for a first prize of R6 000.
Race goers will be able to watch the race unfold, while comfortably seated at one of the many restaurants in The Square, or they can bring along their camping chairs and really get in on the action at one of the strategic vantage points along the route.
The highlight of the day will be the world-class main race that will see 100 elite cyclists thrilling spectators, including Malcolm Lange from Team Microsoft, who will be out to defend his current lead in the series and stay in contention for the R100 000 cheque that will be handed out at the end of the series.
The day will hit a high note with a well-deserved prize giving (see breakdown), and interviews with the race winners, followed by a 3pm live crossover to the Prologue of the Tour de France, of which Liberty Life is the broadcast sponsor.
For those who are less familiar with the technical and tactical approach to the sport, cycling isnt the only entertainment on the menu, with Liberty Life going all out to transform the Criterium Series into an action packed day of fun and entertainment, for the whole family.
We really want to make this a day of good quality entertainment for the entire family, says Liberty Life deputy CE Rex Tomlinson, and were working very hard to create a fun and safe carnival atmosphere.
As such, the Liberty Life Criterium in Sandton will host performances in between the various cycling events, by renowned South African band Watershed and also feature loads of incredible giveaways for the whole family.
