Nine year old Aobakoe Molate from Kwagasrand Primary School could not hide the joy on her face as she walked out of the Atterbury Theatre after watching the Bestmed Healthy Habits play presented to her on Monday 10th March. “The play taught us not to eat junk food, not to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. We also learnt that we should use sunscreen to protect our skin.”
One hundred and fifteen Grade 3 fellow learners invited to watch an informative and interactive play which consists of four main characters, Bad Habit Ben, Sally Sweetheart, Healthy Hanna and Dr Bestie. This initiative is developed for previously disadvantaged and established schools by Bestmed in partnership with Incolabs. CANSA has been endorsing this initiative since its launch in 2013.
For Aobakoe and her school mates, this was not only their first time watching a play but also their first trip to a theatre. "I enjoyed the play a lot and my favourite character was Sally Sweetheart. When I get home, I will tell my parents and friends all about it,” said Aobakwe.
Wicus Kotze, Bestmed’s CFO mentioned how the play was so well presented, "We are happy that the children enjoyed the play. We wanted the play to be scripted in a way that the children would understand. The message reached its intended audience.” For Bestmed, preventative healthcare is crucial and emphasising this to children through edutainment is a great way to retain the information in their minds. "Preventative healthcare activities should be encouraged in children while they are still young so that they can grow up knowing how to look after their bodies and live healthy lives.”
After the primary school show ended, a play for high school scholars called ‘Choose Life’ followed, which emphasised issues faced by teens in high school.
