Old Mutual seizes skills development challenge

08 July 2007 | People and Companies | News | Old Mutual

Investments and savings group Old Mutual (SA) welcomed 237 new learners to its successful learnership programme - the Old Mutual Learnership Amathuba Programme.

Amathuba means "opportunities and opening of doors", and is aimed at equipping learners for entry-level positions in the insurance and investment industry in call centres, customer care, administrative positions and generic administrative support.

The number of new learners starting on the programme this year includes: 115 in the Western Cape plus an additional 17 with disabilities, 39 in KwaZulu-Natal and 66 in Gauteng.

Maxwell Kubheka, Old Mutual's Learnerships Manager, says this 11-month learning opportunity is a powerful transformation tool that affords unemployed post-matriculants the opportunity of achieving an academic qualification, together with workplace experience.

"It also demonstrates Old Mutual's commitment to job creation and imparting the skills and capacity necessary for economic development," said Kubheka, adding that this combination of knowledge, skills and experience will contribute to making learners more employable.

Kubheka notes that the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng Learnership third intake has increased significantly from last year, based on requests for learners by Old Mutual's regional line managers.

The Learnership qualifications include Business Administration NQF Level 4 (offered by Old Mutual as the Training Provider) and Long Term Insurance, NQF Level 4 and Financial Administration NQF level 3 (INTEC College as the Training Provider).

On 25 May Old Mutual celebrated the graduation of 84 Western Cape learners who had successfully obtained qualifications in Generic Business Administration (NQF level 4), Wealth Management (NQF level 4), Long Term Insurance (NQF level 4) and Financial Servi ces Administration (NQF level 3).

Of the 84 Western Cape learners who graduated from last year's programme, explains Kubheka, about 70 secured employment within Old Mutual, with five learners getting employment outside the group.
