Old Mutual (SA) celebrated the graduation of 84 Western Cape learners who have successfully obtained qualifications in Generic Business Administration (NQF level 4), Wealth Management (NQF level 4), Long Term Insurance (NQF level 4) and Financial Services Administration (NQF level 3).

The Savings and Investments group's Cape Town (Pinelands) head office played host to 400 guests at Old Mutual Business School's Amathuba Graduation ceremony.  This event marks the graduation of Old Mutual's 3rd intake of learners, and is also run in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu-Natal.

Maxwell Kubheka, Old Mutual Learnerships Manager said the learnership is a powerful transformation tool that affords unemployed post-matriculants the opportunity of achieving an academic qualification and workplace experience.

"It also demonstrates Old Mutual's commitment to job creation and imparting the skills and capacity necessary for economic development," said Kubheka, adding that this combination of knowledge, skills and experience will contribute to making learners more employable.

He added that Old Mutual is currently in the process of employing learners from last year's intake, and that the statistics to date indicate that over 60% of the learners nationwide will be employed with Old Mutual.

Amathuba means "opportunities and opening of doors", and is aimed at equipping learners for entry-level positions in the insurance and investment industry in call centres, customer care, administrative positions and generic administrative support.

The learners undergo an 11-month programme, which is split between 30% theoretical class work, and 70% workplace experience in appropriate departments at Old Mutual.

"Learners gain valuable practical experience that would stand them in good stead when entering the job market," said Kubhek a.

According to Kubheka, these learners have applied themselves diligently throughout the programme and on graduating from the programme they will be well equipped to go out into the workplace and apply their skills.

The 4th Learnership intake is currently underway and will be starting in June in the different regions - Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
