Part of Momentum ‘s DNA is to empower young women across the country to believe in themselves and open their eyes to the integral roles they can play in shaping this nation’s future. Today was one such example of promoting ‘Take a Girl Child to Work Day’ among its employees.
Take a Girl Child to Work Day enjoys a wealth of support from both public and private sector organisations and corporations. This year’s campaign was aimed at girls in Grades 10 to 12 with the tagline "Dream, Believe, Achieve”.
Frank Magwegwe, Momentum’s Head of Middle Market Segment shared his story of success showcasing that dreams do come true. After completing high school, Magwegwe moved to Johannesburg where he found himself homeless. He later started a fruit and veg stall which funded his university fees. Magwegwe holds a number of diplomas and degrees and has recently completed Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Programme.
"Despite advances in legislation, the majority of women in South Africa still suffer from gender inequality as they lack the skills to make them economically independent” Magwegwe comments. "We are extremely happy to have the opportunity to be part of this initiative and influence girl learners that they can be the future of South Africa by beginning with a dream.”
More than 120 girls visited Momentum offices, which was initiated to highlight the crucial role that young women can inspire, influence and lead others to greatness. Magwegwe continues, "We wanted to get the message out there, ‘by educating and empowering a girl child, you are helping the young women and girls of this country to believe in themselves’.”
To date, over 600,000 girl learners have been blessed with an opportunity to expose themselves to the world of work. Please see included images for Momentum’s journey of taking a girl to work day.
