MiX Telematics seals a deal with Eskom

02 August 2010 MiX Telematics

MiX Telematics, a global leader in vehicle tracking and fleet management technology and services, has won a major contract to provide Eskom Distribution with a tailored solution for their fleet of vehicles.

The tender stipulated that the company awarded the contract would need to provide a way to collate information on vehicle monitoring, tracking and recovery systems on its vehicles. The solution offered by MiX Telematics (Enterprise), a level 2 contributor according to the BBBEE Generic Scorecard, complied with these stipulations.

MiX Telematics will initially install 2 300 of its flagship FM Communicator on-board computers into Eskom vehicles in a roll out project due for completion by October 2010. Gert Pretorius, Managing Director MiX Telematics’ Enterprise division, says the roll out started on 26 July with the initial focus in KwaZulu-Natal.

Vehicle and driver data recorded by the FM Communicator on-board computers will be presented to Eskom’s fleet managers via FM-Web, a secure online portal delivering insightful, real-time information and providing full visibility on the use of their assets and how they are being driven. “Accurate information of this nature will allow the fleet managers to better manage the drivers and their vehicles. Better vehicle and driver management will result in enhanced driver safety, improved utilisation and better fuel efficiency which in turn reduces business risks and operating costs,” said Pretorius.

MiX Telematics will also provide vehicle recovery services to Eskom, thus further protecting the security of their drivers and vehicles. Throughout the process of installing the system and training the users, MiX Telematics will offer independent and objective advice to the Eskom fleet managers through its team of highly-skilled fleet consultants.

”We have seen a dramatic improvement in fuel savings and reduction in operating costs in fleets where the MiX Telematics solutions are installed. This has often resulted in investment payback within 12 months. The contract with Eskom is a major win for MiX Telematics. Eskom will increase its return on investment by having the ability to better manage its fleet, maintain its vehicles and monitor driver behavior,” concludes Pretorius.
