March winners announced for the JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge

Excitement is rising in this year’s 40th JSE Liberty Investment Challenge, as DF Milan High school takes first place in the Speculator portfolio and Martizburg College in the Equity portfolio. This focused youth programme is aimed at introducing South Afr

“We are proud to announce the March competition winners which are as follows, the Equity portfolio winners team “Super Traders” from Maritzburg College in Kwa-Zulu Natal, with learners Mohamed Asmall and Luke Venter won this category while the Speculator portfolio winners team “Everest” from Western Cape’s DF Malan High School; with learners Luke Nel, Tonia Schoeman, Kara Nel and Morne Pienaar,” says Idris Seedat, Manager: CSI in the JSE’s Education Division.

The Challenge runs three distinct streams and teams must select the “risk” portfolio that they wish to take part in. The options are Speculator Portfolio (high risk), Equity Growth Portfolio (moderate risk) and Income Portfolio (low risk). These different games allow participants to select their appropriate wealth management strategy, testing their investment skills against peers.

The school team with the best performance for the month in each portfolio will win R3000. Some hard lessons were learnt by the teams in the month of March as there are no winners in the Income Portfolio category.

This year’s competition has five top prizes for the annual winners valued at R60 000 per portfolio in the schools Challenge while the university Challenge has three top prizes also valued at R60 000 plus an all-expenses paid trip to an international stock exchange.

The competition ends on 27th September after which judging will take place and the winners announced at the award ceremony held at the JSE in October 2013.

Schools Challenge

The schools challenge is targeted at secondary school learners.

• Any South African secondary school may enter one or more teams.
• Team members must be in grades 8, 9, 10 or 11 to be eligible to participate (it is recommended that learners in grades 8 and 9 participate in the income game).
• Grade 12 learners may also participate with the permission of the school principal.
• A team must consist of four members only.
• Each school must have a supervising teacher or mentor.

University Challenge

The university challenge is targeted at all tertiary institutions.

All university students are eligible, but they must be currently registered with the same institution and may form teams - irrespective of field of study of team members. Each participating team may not be less than two members or more than four members at a time.
