29 November 2006 | People and Companies | News | Protactic Strategic Communications

The final race of the Liberty Life Criterium Series has been postponed, from its original date of December 8th, until Friday January 19th 2007 in order to avoid the Christmas rush and allow South Africa's cyclists and cycling fans the chance to sprint into the New Year!

South Africa's top cyclists will be burning rubber on The Boulevard, Umhlanga Ridge, Newtown Centre (next to Gateway), on January 19th which will mark the end of Liberty Life's four-part Criterium Series.

The overall winner of the series will be handed a R100 000 cheque at this grand finale of the thrilling 2006 Criterium Series.  The prize money for the entire series will total a whopping R580 000, the biggest purse in South African cycling to date.

The 2006 Series commenced with the first of the four races in April through the streets of Soweto and was won by Malcolm Lange Team Microsoft. Liberty Life then took the action to Nelson Mandela Square at the beginning of July, with Team Microsoft's Daryl Impey taking the honours for the second race. Malcolm Lange once again emerged as the victor in the third leg of the Series held in Khayelitsha, Western Cape, during September.

The Umhlanga event speeds off at 17h00 and spectators can witness South Africa's top cyclists proving their mettle.  The start/finish line and all festivities will all happen at The Boulevard and spectators will also be treated to some great musical entertainment by Jamali.

The Liberty Life Criterium Series features 100 of South Africa's top cyclists who are invited to take part, including the likes of Malcolm Lange, Neil MacDonald, Nicholas White and Waylon Woolcock. Licensed veterans will also be participating in a special Vets category and the winner will receive R16 000.

Roads will be closed to traffic for the duration of the race and the European 'loop-style' layout is spectator-friendly allowing for easy viewing. There is no entry fee for those wishing to attend the event, but those looking to get a good view of the cyclists should arrive early!
