Liberty Life Criterium Series Cycle Race
Top SA Cyclists to battle it out on Khayelitsha's streets
Khayelitsha is next in line to experience the high speed Liberty Life Criterium Cycle Series which will burn rubber on the local streets on Saturday September 16th.
The race forms part of the thrilling Criterium Series, which Liberty Life launched last year with two successful events held in Sandton and Khayelitsha. The 2006 Series has already seen a race in Soweto during April, which was won by Malcolm Lange Team Microsoft. Liberty Life brought the action to Nelson Mandela Square at the beginning of July with Team Microsoft's Darryl Impey taking the honours.
These European 'loop-style' races are particularly popular for their spectator-friendly design. " Cycling is a sport that lends itself naturally to spectatorship, and this style of racing allows us to bring the crowds as close as possible to the action," comments Liberty Life Deputy CE Rex Tomlinson.
"By holding the events in places such as Soweto and Khayelitsha, we also hope to increase the sport's exposure among the South African population and broaden its appeal. We really wouldn't be doing our bit in terms of development of the sport if we confined our events only to certain areas," he says.
The final event of the 2006 Criterium Series will be held along the Durban Beach Front on December 1st. The prize money for the whole series totals a whopping R580 000, with the winner of each race receiving R50 000, while the series winner will take home an additional R100 000. It's the biggest purse in South African cycling to date.
The Khayelitsha event speeds off at 10h00 with a local fun race followed by the junior race at 10h20. Spectators can witness South Africa's top cyclists proving their mettle from 11h00 with the final race at 14h00.
The start/finish line and all festivities will be in Ntambane Street, Khayelitsha and spectators will also be treated to some great musical entertainment.
The Liberty Life Criterium series features 100 of South Africa's top cyclists who are invited to take part, including the likes of Malcolm Lange, Neil MacDonald, Nicholas White and Waylon Woolcock. A junior category has been now been introduced to the Series with R10 000 up for grabs while the Vets category has been split into 30+ and 40+ each with prize money of R16 000.
Roads will be closed to traffic for the duration of the race and grandstands will be erected along the route to make for easy viewing for cycling supporters.
There is no entry fee for those wishing to attend the event, but those looking to get a good view of the cyclists should arrive early!
