Liberty's Financial Advisers are again making a difference in the lives of underprivileged children who do not have enough food.
Through a partnership with SA Harvest, South Africa’s fastest growing hunger relief organisation, Liberty aims to donate 40 000 meals to help fight hunger in South Africa.
"Last year, we challenged ourselves to donate 30 000 meals and managed to far exceed this target. That success provided a clear focus for this year’s drive: to make a bigger difference by feeding even more children in South Africa’s disadvantaged communities. So, our target has increased, and we aim to provide 40 000 meals this year. We have already pledged the equivalent of over 16 900 meals in just four weeks and are confident that our target is well within our reach," says Johan Minnie, Liberty's Group Executive for Sales.
Research shows that one in ten South Africans go hungry every day. In addition, over a quarter of the population is food insecure. Experiencing extensive periods of hunger can have devastating health effects, especially for children – including stunted growth, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and compromised immune systems.
Over and above the meal donations, Liberty has participated in several activations to support SA Harvest’s food packaging and preparation operations. In commemoration of World Food Day, on 21 October Liberty volunteers rolled up their sleeves in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban to help with food preparation, cooking and serving 1 000 meals to the community. Minnie says the issue of millions of children going hungry in South Africa cannot be ignored and we all need to work together to make a difference in their lives.
"Ours is a brand that cares, a brand that believes we are in all of it with our employees, our advisers, our clients and our communities," says Minnie.“We saw an incredible spirit and dedication to helping us raise meals from our Financial Advisers last year, and caring and extending a helping hand is something that we want to do on an ongoing basis, as individuals and as a sales team.”
SA Harvest is an organisation whose mission is to end hunger in South Africa. They take a revolutionary approach, addressing the systemic causes of hunger and leveraging appropriate technology, while simultaneously tackling the immediate food security crisis through rescuing nutritious food and delivering it for free to where it’s needed most. Since its inception three years ago, SA Harvest has delivered over 31 million meals by rescuing food that would have gone to waste and delivering it to hungry South Africans.
