JSE/Liberty Life investment challenge
Schools take on the bulls & the bears
The 2007 JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge is off to a profitable start with an astounding 6 516 students registered from 318 schools countrywide. Learners participating in the Challenge can look forward to gaining an understanding and knowledge of the economy as well as the commercial dynamics of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge is a monthly competition that enables learners to become aware of the fundamentals of investment strategy, encouraging them to research and strategise issues surrounding trading of JSE-listed shares. Participating schools test their share-trading skills through an ongoing, annual, simulated 'ghost trading' programme. Their performance is tracked and measured in a competition against other teams.
Within the competition there are three separate risk portfolios. Teams decide between Speculator (high risk), Equity Growth (moderate risk) and Income (low risk). The first competition for 2007 commenced in March and saw a team from Maritzburg College emerging as victors in the Equity category. King David Victory Park won the Income category and Pretoria Boys High achieved top score in the Speculator portfolio.
Each member of the winning team is awarded R500 in satrix trusts, with the winning school receiving a further R1, 000 sponsored by Liberty Life.
"The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge demonstrates Liberty Life's commitment to the enrichment of our youth through education," says Momin Hukamdad, Marketing Director of Liberty Life. "We believe our ongoing support for education will ultimately contribute to creating a better future for all South Africans.
"Congratulations to this month's winners and we wish all the participating schools the best of luck for the rest of the Investment Challenge!" says Hukamdad
The JSE/Liberty Life Investment Challenge will continue until September after which the final winners will be announced at a ceremony at the JSE during October.
