International cyclists jetting in for high speed cycle race
A group of top South African cyclists who race internationally will be jetting in to participate in Liberty Lifes rubber burning Criterium Series cycle race to be held at Nelson Mandela Square Sandton this Saturday 1st July.
Daryl Impey (Microsoft), David George (Relax), Tiaan Kanemeyer (Barloworld), Darren Lill (Schwinn) and Ryan Cox (Barloworld) will compete amongst our countrys best in the second event of the exciting series of South Africas Formula 1 of cycling - the Liberty Life Criterium Series.
The Criterium events feature the European loop-style of racing that takes place around a closed circuit, in this case a 2km circuit through the streets of Sandton Central, which will be closed to traffic for the duration of the event. The 2km course will culminate in an exciting finish, located in the heart of Sandtons revitalised CBD - the historic Nelson Mandela Square.
The day will start at 11:30am with an Individual Time Trial followed by a Team Time Trial made up of six pre-selected teams. This will be followed by the Veterans race, featuring 40 invited riders who will cycle for 20 minutes plus one lap for a first prize of R6 000.
Liberty Life intends to make the day an event for the whole family, and not only will spectators be treated to high speed cycling but there will also be other great entertainment highlighted by appearances by top local band Watershed.
Spectators are advised to avoid the following intersections after 11:00. Rivonia Rd and West Rd. Alice Lane and West Rd, Friedman Drive and West Rd, Alice Lane and 5th Street, Friedman Drive and 5th Street. The intersection of Maude and 5th will also be closed except for parking at Dion and the Holiday Inn Garden Court. Also traffic will be re-routed from Gwen Lane and Maude Street.
