In memory of David George, IRMSA Fellow Member

17 July 2018 The Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA)

In memory of David George, IRMSA Fellow Member

From the IRMSA Team:

It is with great sadness that we advise the recent passing on of one of IRMSA’s most esteemed members, David George.

David has been an incredibly active Fellow Member of IRMSA and has been a driving force on the IRMSA KwaZulu-Natal Committee since it was initiated a few years ago.  He was a developer for the Board Exam 2 (CRM Prof) Team and was part of the Pilot Exam development.

David joined Illovo Sugar from Frame Textile Corporation (was Group Risk Manager) on 1 Mar 2002 as Group Risk Manager. On 1 October 2012 was promoted to Group Enterprise Risk Manager, a position he held until his retirement at the end of March 2017.

The team at Illovo Sugar reflected on his time as a colleague:

During his time at Illovo he launched and and embedded Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) across the business.  He spoilt our operations with his passion and drive to have everything perfect and often went more than the extra mile, personally preparing papers for Risk Management Committee meetings

  • `Tall George’  as he was affectionately known as, was a unique character who endeared himself to many in our organisation during his tenure at Illovo Sugar.
  • Showed great interest and insights into all aspects of our business and would often be seen engaging with various people across the business spectrum.
  • Dave’s mannerism’s and humour is what particularly created his magnetic personality and he was able to engage freely with people from all walks of life. Meryl mentioned even in his recent days at Parklands Hospital everybody from Cleaners , Security, Hospital staff knew about Dave and were concerned about his welfare.
  • His famous greeting line:  "I'm riddled with good health!"

When he retired in March 2017, he started his own Risk Management company as he wanted to continue to grow the profession and still make an impact on Risk Management in South Africa.

For so many years, David has been an incredibly committed member and it has been an honour for so many of us to work with him, particularly with his love and passion for IRMSA and Risk Management.

David will be sorely missed by so many.
