Hundreds of half naked men will take to the streets on Friday

14 May 2009 Etana Insurance

Hundreds of nearly naked men will be running from Etana House at 22 Oxford Road in Parktown to the Johannesburg Zoo and back on Friday afternoon, May 15, at 4pm in the ‘Speedo Daredevil Run’ to raise awareness of Testicular Cancer because men aged 15 to 40 are most commonly affected but are bad at self examination and early detection.

“Speedo is providing the runners with their bare minimum cover and the purpose of all involved is to get men thinking as much about self exams for risk control as women have become about breast cancer,” said Carel Nolte, head of people and brand at Etana Insurance, co-sponsors of the event and male bonding entertainment afterwards which will include the Lions vs Warratahs game. “Anyone who wants to register to be a half naked dare devil needs to register at 3.30 at Etana House and can phone 011 351 2500 for more info.”

Useful information about testicular cancer includes:

· 5.4% of men in the age group 15 to 29 got testicular cancer in SA in 1999 (the last stats available)

· One out of 250 men of all ages throughout the world get it

· Usually men get it in one testicle

· It is treatable and early detection is vital

“Women are invited to come and enjoy the view and men are invited to participate if they feel up to the challenge,” says Nolte. “One of the buffest bodies leading the pack will be Olympian rower Ramon Di Clemente. We are expecting several hundred enthusiasts to go dare deviling to get this important message across.”
