Get Moving, SA! Schools Join the Race to Donate 100,000 Pairs of Sports Shoes

03 June 2025 | People and Companies | News | Discovery

In anticipation of Global Running Day on June 4th, Discovery Vitality announces an extension to its Give2Move initiative – which aims to collect 100,000 pairs of new or gently worn running shoes for disadvantaged communities.

South African primary and secondary schools across the country are now invited to donate gently worn running shoes, soccer boots or any other sports footwear between 1 June and 31 July. In recognition of their efforts, schools will stand a chance to win a share of R100,000 to support their own wellness and physical activity programmes.

The Give2Move initiative was launched in February in collaboration with Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, highlighting the government’s commitment to promoting physical activity for all South Africans.

Dinesh Govender, CEO of Vitality says: "Moving, playing, and participating in sport are essential parts of a healthy and active childhood. By encouraging schools to get involved in the Vitality Give2Move initiative, we're hoping to give all children the opportunity to experience the joy of movement comfortably. This campaign not only promotes recycling and community support but also speaks to the heart of Ubuntu, ensuring every child has the chance to take a step toward better health, regardless of their circumstances.

"So many of us have a pair of shoes at home that could be passed on. We hope hundreds of schools will join in this worthwhile initiative," he added.
