Firstrand risk manager awarded 'risk manager of the year'
Jan Lubbe, Risk Manager for First Rand Bank Group has won the Santam Risk Manager of the Year Award.
Lubbe was presented with a R40 000 winners cheque at the annual Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) conference at The Forum in Bryanston last night.
Santam partnered with IRMSA and other industry experts including National Treasury, CURA Risk Solutions, Alexander Forbes Risk Services, Eskom and Sasol to identify the winner.
Mpumi Tyikwe, Santams Executive Head for Specialist and Alternative Distribution says, 'We believe good risk management can be measured and deserves to be rewarded. This award is aimed at the 'unsung heroes' within this industry.
Lubbe is currently Head of Operational Risk Management and Head of Risk Management Services at First Rand Bank. Apart from the implementation of a single risk framework across the three areas of risk, audit and compliance within the Bank, he led the development of a Directors training programme, sponsored a technical project to enable integrated risk reporting and in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg, initiated a risk learnership programme.

This year a new category 'Best Small Business Initiative related to Risk Management' was added, with Peter Smanjak, Senior Risk Consultant of Infinite Risk coming out tops. Smanjak was appointed by World Vision - African Human Resources to assist with Staff Support and Assistance for Life Threatening Illness (SALTI) pilot project.
The Santam Risk Manager of the Year Award, launched in 2005, is open to any individual participating in the discipline of Risk Management, based in and working primarily within the borders of South Africa.
The criteria include outstanding achievements in any discipline of Risk Management and the development of new or innovative concepts to enhance or promote the discipline.
