Doing the right thing
Flora Modiba is a woman on a mission. She manages the Arebaokeng Hospice a non-profit hospice for HIV/AIDS patients as well as a caretaking home for approximately 80 children from age 2 to 18 in Thembisa, Gauteng.
In terms of the children home, Channel Life subsidiary Safrican has donated three industrial sewing machines that were earmarked by Mrs Modiba as a need within the home.
Modiba says that she already has someone that will train up the girls that will leave school and the machines will be used by them to gain an education and lead to job creation, and added to which the people will also sew childrens clothes and uniforms for the needy.
It doesn't end there. At a later stage the trainees will begin increased manufacturing in order to sell their product, which should lead to income generation.
If that wasn't enough - the hospice also undertakes counseling, home-based care, VCT and pain and symptom control. There are four caretakers that currently visit 30 families without income to provide care and allocate donated food.
The families consist mainly of single mothers with HIV, who have children to care for and no income. Seeing the good work that the hospice undertakes prompted Safrican CEO Nthabiseng Mmatli, and Channel Life corporate marketing executive Lourika Smith, to make personal donations in terms of food to these needy families.
