Competitions Tribunal ruling on the matter between Tracetec and Tracker, Netstar, Matrix and VESA
VESA acknowledges the ruling by the Competitions Tribunal for the period of contravention during 1999 and 2003. Since 2003, VESA has evaluated its constitution and tested its standards and specifications. As a result, the constitution has been amended and the standards and specifications have been brought in line with international practice. This ensures that VESA is equipped to take on the challenges it faces in a fair and constructive manner ensuring that both its members, the industry and the public can benefit from the work it does.
It should be noted that VESA built itself, starting in 1987, upon five other vehicle security related committees and, prior to considering the SVR Committee, had built a highly respected organization in providing independent quality products and fulfillment.
It is not in-significant that parties that were seriously compromised during the period the Tribunal has ruled on have committed their support to the role that VESA now plays in ensuring a quality vehicle security industry. There is a new vision and a new resolve in VESA ensuring its independence and fairness. VESA has embraced its role as the only independent non profit organization that represents the vehicle security industry and is supported by the majority of manufacturers and fitment centres in this sector in the country.
Some of the key successes of VESA
1. VESA is representative of the majority of companies involved in the vehicle security industry from manufacturers, distributors and fitters to ensure that the industry is given a common voice.
2. VESA provides measurable technical standards for the insurance industry whereby they can seek better risk management over the assets it insures.
3. VESA, not only works with all role players to develop standards, but has independent staff members on a national basis that constantly ensure that these standards are maintained. VESA is currently writing its second national standard through the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) where they have coordinated all role players in the vehicle tracking industry to participate with SABS in the development of further standards.
4. VESA has become a focal point of many interest groups as a means to accessing role players in the vehicle security industry:
* hosted RFID number plating feed back sessions,
* Chaired Road Safety Conferences,
* Regularly participated in SAPS Vehicle Crime Steering forums,
* Is associated with Business Against Crime,
* Is associated with the Automobile Association of South Africa (AASA),
*Is associated with Trans Union,
*It serves on seven SABS technical work group committees
5. In its quest to constantly improve its standards, it has formed an association with Gerotek (a division of Armscor) for not only the alignment of specifications with international standards, but also to ensure world class testing of its member products.
6. A key feature of VESA is providing ongoing independent quality inspections, tests and audits to ensure that its members conform to the strict quality standards that are in line with international standards.
