Children from Vulamehlo and Buhlebezwe on the South Coast receive life saving chance

17 March 2009 | People and Companies | News | Alexander Forbes

Friday 13 March was a lucky day for 160 children from the Vulamehlo and Buhlebezwe areas who received a R100 000 cheque from Alexander Forbes on behalf of the Siyabona Trust.

The money will be used to place 103 orphans and vulnerable children in monthly day care. In addition the Siyabona Trust supports 57 children at local schools.

Siyabona was established to help care for children affected or infected with HIV. Many children in rural areas find themselves abandoned when their parents become ill or die from HIV. And even where grandparents or extended families takechildrenin thesefamily networks are ofteninsufficiently resourced to adequately care foradditionalchildren.

A team from Alexander Forbes’ Johannesburg and Durban offices, joined by community members and vulnerable children, attended the cheque presentation at the Nkanyisweni crèche.

Mr. Jurie Erwee, Managing Director Alexander Forbes Risk Services said that “Alexander Forbes was committed to giving back to South Africans. This translated into the very many community initiatives that Alexander Forbes funded country-wide.”

Erwee added that Siyabona would not be a short-term project as they intend to support the children into the future.

Molly Bailey from Siyabona expressed her sincere gratitude to the UKZN University Foundation which had been responsible for approaching Alexander Forbes and motivating for the grant.

Mrs. Julie Fredericks, Chairman of the Alexander Forbes Community Trust, together with her team handed out rain jackets, school bags, stationery and other essentials to the children.

Ntomb’futhi Duma also of Siyabona thanked Alexander Forbes for the “significant difference that their donation would make in improving the care, nutrition and access to health services of the children, families and communities touched by Siyabona.”
