Believing that “Knowledge is Power” and at all times acting on this philosophy, Camargue has made an investment into the education of the pupils at the Twilight Children’s Home. Not the first time the Group has supported the call for financial assistance; Camargue has helped cultivate a thirst for education by supplying stationery packs for 48 young boys. This year Camargue MD Mitch Marescia visited the Johannesburg home and personally presented the students with their new school bags and stationery.
Marescia says that it was evident that the Twilight Children’s Home is more than just a shelter. "It aims to incorporate the values of a family home into its operational principles, and perhaps most importantly, assists the children in its care to return to conventional family life.”
Camargue’s approach to CSI is inclusive and this particular cause was nominated and introduced by Nkejane Mofokeng; an underwriter in the Group. His involvement with the Twilight Children’s Home dates back to 2007 as a student at Wits University. A person who firmly believes education is the key to a brighter future, he began volunteering at the Home in his personal capacity, assisting the children with homework, exam preparation and perhaps most importantly, helping them believe in themselves.
Mofokeng says, "While we may all come from challenged backgrounds of varying degrees, we all have dreams and a desire to realise them and we believe that education is the key to dream fulfilment. Education and positive reinforcement allows children to dream. To realise that regardless of circumstance, childhood or background, if you put in the effort, and have the desire within yourself, you can dream the impossible and succeed.”
The home tries to encompass a variety of education and skill training programmes. From IT to arts and crafts – it does what it can with limited resources. Interestingly, the art programme is run by a former Twilight resident who believes in giving back to those who once gave him opportunities. The programme includes beading and pottery and is open to the whole community.
As strong advocates of ‘Knowledge is Power’; Camargue chose to support Twilight Children’s Home as part of its commitment to CSI and sustainable community support.
"It has been a pleasure and privilege to be able to contribute to making the boys lives a little bit easier,” concludes Marescia.
