SPI announces major coup ahead of Cape’s southern suburbs expansion

Sanlam Private Investments (SPI), the blue-chip private client investment management and stockbroking business within the Sanlam Group, today announced that two well-respected BoE senior executives – Gavin Baguley and Carl Schoeman – have resigned in order to join the SPI team. This follows former BoE Private Clients Head of Investments and BoE Stockbrokers MD, Johann van Zyl’s joining SPI on 3 May, 2011. His role will see him, together with his former colleagues, spearheading SPI’s office opening in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. Carmen Adriaanse, Baguley and Schoeman’s assistant at BoE, also announced her resignation to join the dynamic team, further showcasing SPI’s strong position in the private client investment industry.

Daniël Kriel, CEO of SPI says, “This is a major coup for SPI - we are delighted by the calibre of highly-regarded industry professionals joining us. They will definitely add value to the significant intellectual capital already on board at SPI. These latest appointments are a significant milestone in our growth path and we are very excited at the prospect of delivering our investment management and stockbroking services closer to our Cape Town Southern Suburbs’ client base. Having searched for some time for the right individuals for this challenge, I am convinced we have found them in Johann, Gavin, Carl and Carmen.”

“We understand and never underestimate the need to provide a full house of investment services to discerning clients and to this end it was important to us to join a team capable of delivering without compromise in all areas of client needs and expectations”, says Johann van Zyl. “SPI certainly meets this need with their reputation of service delivery, quality advice and investment performance. SPI has established itself over the past few years as a leader in this regard and we look forward to offering this same service to clients and investors living in the greater peninsula area of Cape Town.”

Attracting former BoE staff isn’t new to SPI: Jean du Plessis, a former senior BoE executive and previous MD of Nedcor Securities joined its team in 2010. At the end of last year, SPI ruffled feathers at both Investec and RMB with the appointment of top wealth managers from these firms to its expanding wealth management practice.

“The trend of well-respected industry professionals leaving our competitors over the last couple of years to join SPI is testament to the quality of our business.” says Kriel. SPI’s current assets under management and administration exceed R50 billion.

“Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs present significant opportunity for SPI as we have a growing client base in this area. By strategically locating an office in close proximity to them, we plan to take on our competitors in their own backyard,” concludes Kriel.

Baguley is currently one of BoE’s most senior stockbrokers and portfolio managers and has been with the company for 15 years, similarly, Schoeman is a very senior wealth manager with an exceptional track record and reputation. They, together with Adriaanse, will join SPI on 1 June, 2011.
