The United Nations declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela Day” in 2009. It was to give people around the world an opportunity to spend just 67 minutes taking small actions that could contribute towards the upliftment of the communities they will be able to reach. Assupol Life took the opportunity to provide a few accessories, hours of hard work and equipment to the community of Nelmapius outside Mamelodi east of Pretoria.
The project which is sponsored by Assupol Life in partnership with Cims South Africa, Nelmapius Soup Kitchen and Agape Nursery School, were the main beneficiaries from the Mandela Project. More than 25 Assupol Life personnel volunteered to provide more than 67 minutes of their time and contributed towards the life-changing experience, life changing for the receivers and the givers.
Jungle-Gym equipment, refurbishment of the classroom, kitchen roof, Wendy-house, gas-stove, gas fridge, more than 230 soccer balls for children and other goodie bags loaded with blankets and beanies were given to the centre.
Each member made a small difference. If we all make a difference together, our collective effort can truly change the world. Mandela Day is not a holiday. It is a day for all of us to “opt for humanity” - to roll up our sleeves and play an active role in building our communities. This is an opportunity for each of us to share Nelson Mandela’s vision of a better future for all.
Assupol Life made the difference in this community of Nelmapius Soup Kitchen & Crèche on 19 July 2010.
