Global insurer, Allianz has responded to the late Nelson Mandela’s call for individuals and organisations to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices on Mandela Day. The insurer is donating non-perishable food, first aid kits and books to a Non-Profit Organisation called, Retshwenyegile Relief Givers in Bodibe outside Mahikeng, North West Province on 18 July. Since 2014, the NGO has been providing food to the elderly, the frail and the underprivileged. Retired teacher Moses Lephadi established the organisation after buying a three-hectare piece of land in 2013 with the hope of helping his community. “I am grateful to Allianz for their support as it will enable us to sustain, care for and educate our people,” said Mr Lephadi. “I get together with volunteers three times a week to cook and serve food for about 150 residents and Allianz’s contribution will make a significant difference at Retshwenyegile.”
The aid is being made through Allianz’s four entities in South Africa: Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) Africa, Euler Hermes, Allianz Global Assistance and Allianz Re. “Mr Mandela was a global icon and as global organisation, we are determined to contribute to his vision of addressing the world’s social injustices to ensure a just and equal society, a thriving economy and a sustainable planet,” says Delphine Ma?dou, CEO of AGCS Africa.
“South Africa and Africa is home to Allianz as we have been in the country since 1948 and on the continent from 1912 and we are committed to its socioecomic development and growth in line with Vision 2063. For us, sustainability means to create a long-term economic value by applying responsible corporate governance, by protecting our environment and resources, and by supporting communities and society as a whole.”
Education and children are key focus areas within Allianz’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The company is developing a project that will provide financial literacy to high school learners in Johannesburg. The pilot programme will be launched later in the year and will reach learners in Gauteng.
