Absa AgriBusiness opens Disaster Relief Fund

14 October 2010 Absa

An Absa Agribusiness Disaster Relief Fund 2010 account has been opened for contributions towards veld and drought relief.

The Absa Agribusiness Disaster Relief Fund 2010 savings account number is 92-5241-2925 and branch code is 63-20-05.

Ernst Janovsky, General Manager of Absa AgriBusiness, says the account will be managed by Absa Agribusiness Management.

Veld fires all over the country were particularly devastating over the past two weeks, destroying grazing of more than 520 000 ha. Fires were reported in the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Northern Cape while the Eastern and Western Cape as well as Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Northern Cape have been stricken by droughts.

The Free State has already been declared a disaster area.

In general, veld fires have been fanned by the current hot and windy conditions. They have also been started accidentally, by electric storms or human error, for example, people who weld in the dry veld.

Farmers in most of the areas will invest in large sums of money to buy feed (Lucerne/Hay or Oulands grass) for their cattle.

Farmers with extra or surplus feed who want to contribute can contact the different organised agricultural structures in the different provinces that were hit by the fires or drought.

Donations will be distributed to organised structures in Agri Limpopo, Agri North-West, Agri Free State, Agri Northern Cape, Agri Eastern Cape and Agri KwaZulu-Natal,” said Janovsky.
