New insight for family businesses at workshops

19 March 2008 | People and Companies | Events | Old Mutual

An exciting new series of family business workshops will get underway in April in an ongoing effort by financial services provider, Old Mutual to support and empower this vital sector of the South African economy. Workshops will run until August in all major centres of the country.

This year, the focus will be on important challenges and obstacles facing family-owned businesses with specific emphasis on emotional challenges – the one aspect that separates family businesses from other business entities.

The workshops will include a specially-commissioned audio-visual big screen projection in which actors will depict various scenarios typical in family businesses.

Following the show, personnel practitioner and communication expert, Archie van Biljon, together with André Diederichs, Old Mutual’s family business specialist, will present delegates with practical solutions to their challenges and highlight effective strategies to manage their businesses towards profitability and prosperity.

Other equally important issues that will be under the spotlight include corporate governance, succession planning and the need to establish formal structures to successfully take a family-owned business from one generation to the next.

Says Diederichs: “With family businesses representing some 80% of all registered businesses, it is clearly a sector that cannot be ignored. The reality is that only some 30% are handed over successfully from first to second generation highlighting a critical need for support.”
