Mens A winners - University of Pretoria

Winners of the 30th Mutual & Federal SA Universities Boat Race held over the weekend in Port Alfred were University of Johannesburg for the Ladies’ final and University of Pretoria (Tukkies) for the Men.

This year’s event, from 09th to 11th September, had nine universities participating – Wits, University of Johannesburg, Tukkies (Pretoria), Stellenbosch, Rhodes, University of Cape Town, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Fort Hare and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

“Definitely no records were set this time round” says Sean Kerr, a Trustee of University Rowing, with weather conditions in the Eastern Cape making for a very difficult race, with rain on Friday and strong headwinds blowing up the Kowie River on Saturday for the finals.

Kerr says that this year’s winners were among the favourites, so there were no surprises in this regard. “However, a notable achievement was that University of Cape Town got into the Men’s final race.”

Caroline da Silva, Mutual & Federal executive general manager: Sales & Marketing says that despite the tough weather conditions, the event went according to plan and a really good time was had by both participants and spectators. “Once again we thank the people of Port Alfred and the various organisers and administrators for allowing us to host this annual event in their corner of the country.”
