Lloyd’s to recreate famous underwriting room at AIE 2024

08 May 2024

The Lloyd's underwriting room is a legendary and iconic space in the insurance world, located within the Lloyd's building in London, England. It serves as the heart of the Lloyd's market, where syndicates of underwriters come together to assess risks and write insurance policies.

Inside the underwriting room, underwriters, brokers and representatives of insurance companies gather in a bustling atmosphere to negotiate and finalise insurance contracts. The process involves evaluating risks, setting premiums and determining policy terms. The room buzzes with activity as individuals discuss, negotiate, and make deals.

“The Lloyd's underwriting room holds a rich history and is renowned for its tradition, innovation and resilience,” says Boniface Chiwota, Lloyd’s Manager for Africa of market development and strategy. “Despite technological advancements and changes in the insurance industry, it remains a symbol of tradition and excellence, attracting insurance professionals from around the world who seek to participate in its unique marketplace.”

Lloyd’s will be recreating the famous underwriting room at the upcoming African Insurance Exchange at Sun City, from 21 to 24 July 2024.

“We will be setting up a version of the underwriting room in one of the conference venues at Sun City,” adds Chiwota. “The space will allow conference delegates to congregate and share information over a cup of coffee, just like they do at Lloyd’s in London.”

The room will be manned by Lloyd's brokers, coverholders, insuretechs and managing agents representing multiple classes of business.

“Our team will host ‘boxes’ where they will be able to talk to conference delegates about the full potential of the Lloyd’s market. Anyone is welcome to drop in during the conference.”

In addition to the underwriting room, Lloyd’s will also make one of the keynote addresses as well as fielding a panellist for one of the business sessions.

“Our commercial director, Dawn Miller, will address the delegates on the foundations of insurance and what can be learnt as we go into the future. She will also sit on a panel discussing the evolution of insurance and how the fundamentals of business insurance are shifting.”

You can catch Dawn’s presentation on Monday 22 July, from 09:50-10:30 as well as the panel discussion from 10.45 -11.45.

“We are delighted to have Lloyd’s on board as a sponsor for the African Insurance Exchange,” says Thokozile Mahlangu, CEO of the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA), which co-hosts the conference with the South African Insurance Association (SAIA). “The fact that they have been so creative with their sponsorship is really inspiring and shows what diverse options are available to sponsors and exhibitors alike.”

Mahlangu says there are still a few sponsorship opportunities available at this year’s African Insurance Exchange.

“Anyone interested in joining our list of prestigious sponsors is welcome to contact vumokuhle@iisa.co.za.”
