On the 17th and 18th October, a group of 36 off-road vehicles departed Durban in convoy for the central Drakensberg to deliver much needed supplies and literacy materials to twelve underprivileged schools in the area. This was the KZN part of the nationwide Rally to Read programme of which Bidvest Insurance are the hosts.

The three-year programme was established in 1998 when the Human Sciences Research Council approached the McCarthy dealerships and asked them to provide four wheel drive vehicles needed to reach rural schools as part of a study on school resources. Seeing the dire need for supplies, the once off expedition quickly became a national project. Now convoys of vehicles transport educational material and resources from five cities across the country throughout the year to some of South Africa’s most remote and neglected schools. Bidvest Insurance has been the sponsor for the KZN leg for the past five years.

The three-year programme entails providing literacy material to the schools as well as much needed teacher training and support. This is provided by the READ Educational Trust, an organisation which began after the 1976 student uprisings and is today committed to improving the language and literacy levels of South African learners.

Programme sponsors visit their schools during the three-year period and are given the opportunity to monitor and evaluate learners’ progress as well as the programmes’ overall success.

As the host of the Rally to Read KZN leg, Bidvest Insurance helps supply the vehicles through Bidvest Automotive and Bidvest Car Rental and coordinates the rally logistics while hosting the other sponsors. These include:

• Telkom Foundation Trust
• Total Facilities Management
• Toyota SA Motors
• Brother Int’l South Africa
• Mercedes Benz SA
• Bidtrack
• TNS Research Surveys
• Toolquip & Allied KZN

Lucy Cooke, Marketing Manager from Bidvest Insurance said, "111 people from eight sponsor companies will be driving 36 vehicles to participate in this year’s rally. As a group we are proud to be bringing so many people together for such a good cause.”
