IRF Journey to Sustainability Conference

The Institute of Retirement Funds believes that retirement is not just a short-term plan but also a journey that begins at an early stage of ones life. The journey to retirement is essential to the sustainability of any person as it impacts on the people

This years conference, starts on the 2nd until the 4th of September is set against the background of sustainability, endurance, protection of retirement holistically and will look beyond the immediate challenges with thought-provoking sessions on the future of retirement saving. These will include future trends in society and the workplace, global lessons that can be learnt and what the next generation of pensions should look like for tomorrow’s savers.

The conference is undoubtedly a lead to sore hearts to on those who will not be attending as over the two days they will miss out on our collage of 37 topflight speakers, 6 engaging workshops on the hottest current issues and 20 plenary sessions facilitated by the industry’s opinion leaders. Our plenary sessions look at the essentials of a sustainable mix with discussions on the SA economy, the global economy, emerging markets, rising costs, governance and due diligence, ESG issues, risk management and retirement reform and we are delighted that we have been able to secure some eminent speakers to give us their views. The workshop line-up is wide-ranging and varied and offers thought-provoking viewpoints from speakers.

This conference will of exceptional value to people in the retirement industry, no matter the dimension of the industry they operate in. The ordinary South African can also part take in the conference because the programme uniquely shows that the Journey to Sustainability is for all and any journey is given significance by those we travel with. This conference will be an eye-opener to all of legislative, political pressures that play a role on our sustainability in South Africa and beyond, we are proud that the Institute of Retirement Funds is allowing everyone an opportunity to take a practical lead on these issues.

The Institute of retirement Funds’ annual conference, ‘Journey to Sustainability’ will be held Cape Town International Convention Centre, 02- 04 September 2012. Keynote addresses by Clem Sunter. Conference Theme

The Journey to Sustainability: People, Planet, Profit.

The conference will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Delegate registration process will be conducted on 02 September 2012 combined with cocktail function at the Exhibition Hall 1&2. The plenary session will be held on 03 and o4 September 2012 in the auditorium of the Cape Town ICC. Delegates will also attend interactive workshops on the first and second day of the conference. A Gala Dinner has been organized on 02 September 2012 from 19h00-00h00.

Overview of the Programme

1. Delegates Registration

The IRF conference registration of delegates will take place on 02 September 2012 from 17h00-19h30. Registration process will be accompanied by a cocktail function.

2. Plenary session (auditorium)- 03 September 2012 - Day 1.

The first plenary session will be held on 03 September 2012. The topics to be discussed include: “The journey to sustainability”, Building a sustainable future, Renewable energy initiatives and an overview on current trend of growth and fund investment. Delegates will have the privilege to attend two workshops from 14h30-15h30. The first workshop will focus on what role can the industry play in the high unemployment environment we currently face? The second workshop will focus on “what is the most appropriate context for the triple bottom line (or PPP/SRI) within South Africa, i.e. what to look out for when negotiating an agreement with a service provider.

The Master of Ceremonies is Kreejay Govender. Clem Sunter will conduct the Keynote address.

Gala and Awards Evening

After the conference there will be pre-drinks at the Exhibition Hall 1&2. The Gala Dinner event will take place from 19h00 to 00h00.

3. Plenary session (auditorium) - 04 September 2012 - Day 2.

The conference will start with light refreshments at the Exhibition Hall 1&2. The topics of the day include the following: An overview of the economy in relation to the South African politics leading to Mangaung, the Shrinkage and over-regulation, Adjudicator’s report, technology and retirement funds from communicating with members to administering funds, unpacking all costs and costs impact on members’ savings, legal parameters (dos or don’ts for trustees and issues surrounding whistle blowing.
