Impact of Artificial Intelligence in Insurance with Matt Smith

Overview
We will explore the concepts of Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and how they all fit together. Next we will take a quick look at how the above are being used by tech giants. Finally, we will end with a discussion around the applicability of AI in several areas of the Short-Term Insurance industry and what to expect in the future.

Facilitator
Matt Smith lead the Advance Analytics team within Discovery Insure. His team was responsible for identifying new analytical methods and opportunities, across the global industry and within Discovery Insure. The team’s key focus has been the application of machine learning methods to areas within Discovery Insure, including forensics, claims administration, pricing, telematics and distribution. Since his movement out the of the Advanced Analytics team, he has taken over strategic projects focused on implementing AI in insurance.
Prior to his movement into the corporate environment, he completed an MSc Actuarial Science at the University of Pretoria, where his key focus was applying Artificial Neural Networks to the South African financial markets.
