The digital economy is here and it is booming. Although technology has advanced the way in which companies run their businesses and service their clients, the boom in the digital economy is coupled with cyber threats and risks that can have serious consequences for a company. These risks have been sharply highlighted by the Covid-19 outbreak which has seen more companies move online and work remotely.

It is important that companies treat the mitigation of cyber threats and risks as a key commercial priority in order to safeguard their reputation and to mitigate what can be substantial organisational risks, for example data breaches. Particularly during Covid-19, we have seen a surge in the number of data breaches and with many employees working remotely there is even more possible exposure and hackers are taking advantage of possible gaps. Cyber threats have resulted in a global response to the protection and security of personal and corporate data, including South Africa’s own measures like the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPI).
