The FPI Annual Refresher is a full-day online webinar that will unpack some of the most important legislative developments in 2021, and other key topics affecting the financial planning industry.
Like last year, the event will be conducted as a webinar, allowing everyone to participate safely. Despite being held virtually, the webinar will not be a one-way affair – attendees will be allowed to engage with the speakers after each presentation.
Experts have been lined up to discuss a wide range of topics, ranging from practical advice about estate, retirement and tax planning to the profession's future.
Starting strong
Wessel Oosthuizen CFP® will kick off proceedings with two sessions addressing recent court determinations and how these will impact financial planners. Then, he will apply practical examples that are relevant to members in the following areas: estate planning; legislative changes to retirement planning; a tax update for financial planners; clarity on the division of living annuities at death and divorce for investment planning; crypto assets and investment planning; and general practice and business tips, including how open finance will affect financial planning.
Wessel developed and managed the former Centre for Financial Planning Law at the University of the Free State (now the School of Financial Planning Law); he served on FPI's board of directors and also served for more than 10 years on numerous international committees, including the FPSB Professionalism and Standards Committee.
He currently works as an independent financial planner and lecturer at Stellenbosch University Business School and is a FPSB Global Job Analysis and Global Exam Specification panel member.
The GEPF and you
Maya Fisher-French is up next. She is the presenter of #MoneyMatters on eNCA, editor of the money pages at City Press and the founder and editor of the personal finance site mayaonmoney.co.za.
With her inimitable style, Maya will spend half an hour discussing the Government Employees Pension Fund – more specifically, how the GEPF works to ensure 'best advice' for clients who are members of the fund.
Legal eagle
Dan Berglund CFP® will take over from Maya and address the latest change to the Long Term Insurance Act (LTIA) and how it affects employee benefit schemes. Specifically, he will be looking at how the Act governs unapproved and funeral benefits being paid to a deceased estate, without a beneficiary form having been completed in respect of these two benefits. He will also be discussing in-fund preservation and what a planner should know.
Dan is a financial advisor at Liberty Group South Africa and Vice Chairperson of FPI's Employee Benefits Competence Committee. His career in the financial planning industry spans more than 20 years.
Medical matters
After a short break, Gail Gibson CFP® and Kobus Kuhn CFP® will discuss medical aid schemes' technical aspects and how to maximise their benefits. Understanding medical aid schemes is vital in the financial planning process, especially at retirement, when clients will be making more frequent use of their medical aid benefits.
Gail is a lecturer and author who assists Moonstone Business School of Excellence (MBSE) and other international institutions in creating successful professionals. She is also busy helping the Compliance Institute Southern Africa to create a new Compliance Practitioner qualification.
Kobus is an independent financial planner who founded his own practice, North Financial Planning, in 2021. He has served on numerous FPI committees and is often featured on media platforms such as CapeTalk, KFM, East Coast Radio and 94.7.
Last but not least…
FPI's own Lelane Bezuidenhout CFP® will guide the afternoon's proceedings – she will discuss a FAIS Ombudsman determination relevant to financial planners. Lelane has been working in the financial services industry since 1999 and is FPI’s CEO, where she endeavours daily to serve FPI's vision of 'professional financial planning and advice for all.
