19 February 2014 FAnews

Melrose Training will be hosting the Insurance Underwriting and Claims Management Summit, which is set to take place at the Holiday Inn in Sandton, Johannesburg, on March 13 and 14 of 2014. The event will address the current challenges faced by insurance industry professionals and the opportunities presented within the local insurance market.

"The insurance underwriting process is a fairly complex exercise,” says Charity Wockleman, Melrose Training Group Managing Member. "In preparation of for this event, we’ve found that there appear to be vast differences in the underwriting methodology from one insurance provider to the other. Some providers use Telematics and complex algorithms, where others rely on the underwriters’ intuition to determine risk profiles. The Insurance Underwriting and Claims Management Summit aims to present a set of thought-provoking concepts to draw a more clearer overview of the African insurance landscape.”

Showcasing local and international expertise

"The event will showcase both local and international industry experts. The cross-section between local and international expertise will provide delegates with an holistic perspective of the global insurance industry,” says Wokleman.

Expert speakers include South Africa’s Chris Hart, Chief Strategist at Investment Solutions, and Jonathan Holden who serves as Managing Executive at Innovation Group’s Insurance Delivery arm. International speakers include Netherlands-based Glenn Lottering, who currently serves as Senior Director of Oracle Insurance’s Financial Services Global Business Unit, Caroline Newman, Chief Executive Officer of United Kingdom-based Lawdacity, and Toronto-based Maryanne Obwaka, an expert on banking, mutual fund investments, loans, mortgages and insurance at Strategic Information Technology.

"We’ve ensured that the event covers pertinent issues facing the insurance market in South Africa. As such, we’ve included an important address titled "Understanding the Insurance Laws Amendment Bill [B16-2013],” says Wokleman. "Our Insurance and Big Data Innovation Partner, Oracle Insurance, will be represented by Glenn Lottering, who will present on market trends, strategic operational challenges faced when assessing risk in underwriting, and the use of new, relevant and cost-effective risk assessment technology.”
