The Bestmed TuksRace celebrated its 10th year on Saturday 15 February 2020 at the Bestmed TuksSport Athletic Stadium in Pretoria.
The celebratory tone for the day was set by the release of 100 balloons by Bestmed CEO, Leo Dlamini, along with Madelein Barkhuizen (Bestmed Executive Manager: Sales and Marketing), Prof. Tawana Kupe (University of Pretoria’s Vice Chancellor) and Prof. Vollie Spies just before the start of the race.
The 42.2km marathon, a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons, started at 05:30. Among the prominent full marathon runners was Stephen Mokoka, winner of the 42.2km race in 2018.
Leo Dlamini and Madelein Barkhuizen participated in the 10km race. They both finished strong. Madelein, on finishing the race and looking as fresh as when she began, stated that “It was one of the most scenic and iconic runs in Pretoria.”
Celebrations continued throughout the day. Besides the Bestmed team, special acknowledgement must be given to the Mercedes waterpoint for their energy and enthusiasm despite the heat.
The day ended on a high at the prizegiving. Othaniel Phahlane won the open men’s 42.2km race with a time of 2:28:30, while Patience Khumalo came first in the open women’s full marathon with a time of 3:18:33.
Bestmed was also acknowledged and celebrated for their 10 years of sponsorship and presented with a gift from the University of Pretoria to CEO, Mr Leo Dlamini.
