If you haven’t already heard, the date for the 2023 FPI Professionals Convention is set, and we have some impressive speakers lined up for the event.

The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa’s (FPI) Professionals Convention this year will highlight the importance of looking back at where we were before the global lockdown in 2020, while moving forward into a future filled with change, innovation and growth – hence aptly themed BACK TO THE FUTURE!

Join the FPI for a two-day event on 14 and 15 November at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Seats are going fast so secure yours today.

If you cannot make it to attend in-person, there is the opportunity to join online as well.

The speaker programme will delve into relevant topics aimed at empowering a forward-looking audience of dedicated financial professionals. The various speakers will cover topics encompassing aspects including:

· the new knowledge domain of the psychology of financial planning

· how the future outlook of practice management and technology has changed

· people’ aspects such as succession planning and remuneration structures

· cyber security risks and social media strategies needed to grow a financial planning business

In keeping with the tradition of hosting the best local and international speakers on topics that add value to South Africa’s financial planners, advisors and customers, the impressive speaker lineup we have this year will include:

Dante De Gori, CFP®

Dante De Gori, CFP®, is the CEO of the Financial Planning Standards Board Ltd. (FPSB). Prior to this, he served as CEO of the Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA). He is passionate about advancing the profession of financial planning and supporting CFP® professionals around the globe and will be sharing his thoughts on the Future of Financial Planning.

Mandy Wiener

Mandy Wiener is a prominent South African journalist and author who will be addressing the topic of hope and prosperity for South Africa. She is one of the county’s best known and most credible journalists and authors. She is the host of the Midday Report on Radio 702 and Cape Talk and is a regular columnist for News24. For the past two decades she has worked as a multi award-winning reporter specialising in investigative journalism and legal matters. She is a regular keynote speaker who delivers a good dose of reality with some perspective and a focus on what she calls 'The Hope Dealers' in South Africa where she focuses on the good people who are doing their jobs to better South Africa. Her stories inspire the audience to work together to fight for a prosperous South Africa.

Dr. Charles Chaffin

Dr. Charles Chaffin’s work encompasses a broad range of fields, from educational and cognitive psychology to financial planning. He is the author and lead editor of seven books on topics of financial planning and cognitive psychology – helping practitioners become more client- centered and helping individuals and companies address distraction in the workplace. He consults with organisations on ways to develop and adapt learning strategies to meet both organisational goals as well as serve a broad range of learners. He has been working with financial planning practitioners and researchers to develop and present new research that has direct impact on the practice of financial planning.

Vusi Thembekwayo

Vusi Thembekwayo is a South African entrepreneur, global business consultant and Global Business Speaker. He will be presenting on ‘Leading at the Edge of Chaos’, focusing on the constant state of chaos the world is in, the panic induced by lockdowns, travel bans, stock market collapses, housing market bubbles and the geo-political unrest that have made chaos the new normal. He will be laying out the science to leading through this chaos by unpacking it into a must-hear inspirational keynote presentation. Vusi was ranked number 1 in public speaking at age 17 and went on to receive third place in the world at the English-Speaking Union International Competition. He delivered his first professional talk in 2002 and, over the past 15 years, has been gracing the global stage with his humour, charisma and thought-provoking content.

Emma Sadleir

Emma Sadleir is South Africa’s leading expert on social media law. Her company, The Digital Law Company, specialises in educating and advising corporates, employees, schools, parents, teachers, and universities on the legal, disciplinary and reputational risks of social media. Her areas of expertise include managing the legal consequences of using social media including defamation, privacy, hate speech and intellectual property; cyberbullying and harassment; sexting and pornography offences; the disciplinary consequences of using social media; personal and brand reputation management on social media; health and social media and online safety. Emma and her team have collectively addressed hundreds of blue-chip corporate clients and over 200,000 learners across Africa and the United Kingdom through educational talks and presentations. She also teaches media law to journalists and lawyers and lectures on personal reputation management on various MBA programmes.

Lelane Bezuidenhout, CFP^®

Lelane Bezuidenhout, CFP^®, is the CEO of the FPI. She has been involved in the financial services industry since 1999, and started at a large life insurer where she fulfilled many roles over 11 years with the insurer. It is in her dealings with compliance matters and consumer complaints that she took an interest in financial planning from a standard setting point of view. Over the years she studied, as a working mom, to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER^®. From the life insurer she joined the FAIS Ombud’s office where she investigated FAIS (regulatory) related complaints. After five years at the ombud she joined the FPI in 2014 and headed the Certification and Standards department for a few years. In her current role as CEO she continues to impact positively on the lives of all in serving the FPI’s vision of ‘Professional financial planning and advice for all’.

Nici Macdonald, CFP^®

Nici Macdonald, CFP^®, is the Head of Department: Certification at the FPI. She has a strong legal background and is passionate about the future of financial planning and financial advice in South Africa. Nici has extensive experience in practice management within a financial services provider, specifically the operational support needed and procedures underpinning the financial planning advice process. She has acted in the capacities of wealth advisor and fiduciary advisor for many years before taking up the position at the FPI. Academically, Nici was involved with the University of the Free State in drafting material, setting examinations, and lecturing for the Advanced Diploma in Estate and Trust Administration.
