2007 Convention to Focus on Insurance Industry Opportunities

The year 2010 is a much-awaited milestone in the annals of South African history. Not only is the next FIFA Football World Cup destined to grace our shores that year, but many far-reaching changes are also expected to have transformed most sectors of our country's economy, giving rise to new challenges and opportunities.

South Africa's professional financial planning industry is no exception. To the contrary, the current and prospective changes to the regulatory environment governing the financial services industry are expected to affect all specialist sub-sectors served by financial planners and broker intermediaries from life assurance, pension funds and healthcare through to short-term insurance and asset management. The result is a prevailing climate of uncertainty but also untapped opportunity.

The Association of Professional Financial Planners (Luasa) has opted to dedicate its 2007 Annual Convention to exploring the probable state of the industry in 2010. Scheduled to take place at the CSIR Conference Centre in Pretoria on Tuesday 31 July, the convention will be attended by members of Luasa, the broader insurance industry and other key stakeholders.

For those who have already bought into soccer-fever, the convention's programme will feature soccer-supremo Gary Bailey as the keynote speaker. Acclaimed experts will also share their analyses of various aspects of the industry, with the line-up of speakers including Raymond Byrne, newly-elected CEO of Luasa, who will take an in-depth look at the life assurance industry; and Adam Samie, President of SAIA, who will cover the short-term industry. Janette Clarke and Jeremy Gardiner - both highly regarded in their fields - will address issues relating to the healthcare and asset management sectors respectively.

"In addition to covering the challenges and opportunities facing the industry," says Byrne, "Luasa's 2007 convention will also serve as a platform from which to update delegates and industry representatives on the probability and impact of forthcoming regulation."
